Our History

The history of LES COMPAGNONS DE LA FRANCE LIBRE is inseparable from the history of the Free France movement and the heroic individuals who took a stand during a pivotal time in world history. The association was founded to honor veterans and former combatants and to ensure that their stories, sacrifices, and achievements are never forgotten.

From its inception, our association has been guided by a commitment to historical preservation and education. Recognizing that the generation of individuals who experienced World War II firsthand is diminishing, our founders sought to create an organization that would act as a living repository of memory. By documenting personal testimonies, collecting artifacts, and organizing commemorative events, we aimed to ensure that future generations could access authentic accounts of the Free France experience.

Over the years, our association has grown from a small group of committed volunteers into a fully established organization with a wide range of activities. Our historical exhibitions have become a cornerstone of our work, allowing visitors to experience the past through objects, photographs, documents, and interactive displays. Each exhibition is meticulously researched and curated to convey not only historical facts but also the human experiences behind them.

Conferences and lectures have also played a crucial role in our history. By inviting historians, veterans, and researchers to share their knowledge, we have created forums where audiences can engage with history directly. These events have provided opportunities for in-depth discussions about strategic decisions, ethical dilemmas, and the personal stories of those involved in the Free France movement.

Our participation in national ceremonies has reinforced our connection to the broader community. Attending official events alongside veterans and local authorities has allowed us to celebrate achievements, commemorate sacrifices, and remind society of the importance of freedom and civic responsibility. Through these activities, our association has become an important link between the past and present, connecting generations and ensuring that memory remains active and relevant.

Today, LES COMPAGNONS DE LA FRANCE LIBRE continues to expand its historical initiatives. Our archives, educational programs, and public events reflect a dedication to authenticity, inclusivity, and accessibility. As we look toward the future, we remain committed to our founding principles: preserving history, honoring heroes, and fostering understanding. The history of our association is, therefore, not just a record of the past but a living mission, guiding our actions and inspiring our ongoing commitment to memory and education.
